The Navy will reveal the name of a new submarine at Liberty State Park in Jersey City on Sunday.
Secretary of the United States Navy Ray Mabus will announce the next Virginia-class submarine at the ship-naming ceremony at the North Field, 200 Morris Pesin Dr., at 10 a.m. The event is open to the public.
Virginia-class submarines are designed to seek and destroy enemy ships. These submarines carryout intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions and support battle group operations. The Navy currently has 41 of these ships in commission.
Mabus is the 75th secretary and is responsible for recruiting, organizing, equipping, training, and mobilizing the Navy.
